  • Because most of our jobs are physical in nature, we require pre-employment physicals. We use the same occupational health clinic for all prospective employees. They have job descriptions on file for all our positions detailing the amount the ee must be able to lift, how often they sit/stand/bend/reach, whether driving is required, etc.

This way, our pre-employment physical process is standardized. I would be very leary of going with a statement from a personal physician who may not be familiar with our occupational requirements (even if provided with a job description).
  • PROs
    1)less costly to the company.
2)Probably easier to obtain by some potential ee's
3)May hold the physician to the same level of professional judgement as the physical.

    CONs
    1)can't think of any,
we only require physical exams of our professional truck drivers, which is required by law to stay current as a CDL licensed driver and a "statement of good health" would not satisfy the DOT requirement. Other wise, the pre-employment drug screen is all that our "Hogs" demand, they don't want a drug head or drunk giving them their rations or medicine, its a matter of special trust and confidence!

  • Pros of having an adequate pre-employment physical:
    -Physicians periodically tour your facility.
    -Physicians understand you job descriptions.
-Physicians complete your agreed upon checkoff list.
-Physician also serves as MRO for drug screen.
    -The client-doctor relationship is fostered.

Cons of using the generic fitness for duty form:
-Physician has never seen your facility.
-Physician doesn't know your job descriptions.
-Physician has no stake in the relationship.
-You have no contact relationship for questions.
-Physician has no obligation to employer, only to patient.
-You can't change vendors. Physicians who do the pre-emp physicals understand this reality.

Pros of using the generic fitness for duty form:
-You have a piece of paper.
