Cell Phone Policy

I need to incorporate a cell phone policy, into company handbook. Does anyone have a policy on the use of cell phones during working hours?

  • Personal calls are discouraged. On most construction sites, the work force is distributed over several areas, making it difficult to contact employees for personal calls. An emergency call, however, will receive prompt attention, and you will be notified as soon as possible. Your supervisor will provide you with a telephone number that may be given to your family for use in emergency situations. Personal cell phones should not be used on job sites except during breaks.
    The Company may issues cell phones to individual in order to allow them to be more productive in managing the work/job they are on. These phones are for work use only and should not be used for personal use except on occasion. Individuals who misuse the company phone will have it removed.

  • Our policy says mostly the same...but we've gone a step further and provided guidelines for use in a car (many of our ee's have a company cell and drive agency cars)...

    Inasmuch as The Agency may be held liable for accidents resulting from an employee's negligent use of a cellular telephone while operating a motor vehicle, The Agency sets forth the following requirements:

     Calls may not be made while an employee is operating a motor vehicle including calls made using telephones equipped with a "hands-free" or voice-activated "AutoDial" features;
     Calls may be made from a regular cellular telephone from a vehicle that is completely stopped and parked in a safe location (i.e., not stopped at a red light).
     Each employee is responsible to place the safety of themselves and those with whom the road is shared above the need to conduct business via cellular telephone while driving.

    Disciplinary Action

    Failure to abide by these guidelines could result in the suspension or revocation of the Agency-issued cellular telephone, suspension or revocation of access to Agency vehicles, limitation placed upon approved travel for business purposes, and other disciplinary action up to, and including, termination.

  • Our policy stated that cell phone use was to be restricted to break time only. If one was expecting an urgent call, then they were to notify their supervisor.
    Did you see the movie "Bend it like Beckham" ? there is a funny scene as a cell phone rings and about 15 middle aged Indian ladies reach into their purses to answer.

  • Thanks Bill,

    You were a great help.
