NC appliucation retention question

We currently do not have a published policy re the acquisition and retention of employment applications. What is the minimum retention requirement, if any, for unsolicited applications and/or resumes. We get ALOT of walk-in apps and mailed in resumes when we do not have openings. Is there a difference under state or federal law relative to unsolicited apps versus apps in response to published or advertized job openings. Any info is helpful and appreciated.
