Once upon a time, several employees called me because their manager was prohibiting them from putting overtime worked on their timecards. The 'big boss' called me in and yelled because I met with the employees and didn't go through the manager.
Sometimes people in charge are power hungry, denigrating turkeys that get their greatest pleasure from making everyone under them squirm.
I used to go head to head with this one. I would say "you can't to that, it's against the law" and he would shout back, "Don't tell me what I can't do."
If you happen to be working for one of these, you have my sympathy. Your choices are to (1) stick by what you know is right and put up with the abuse as you try to bring some humanity to the organization or (2) get out.
