Sick Leave Defined

Do you allow ee's to use sick leave, rather than vacation, when they are not personally sick? If so, does it extend to the illness of their child, spouse, parent, sibling? (The question is not referring to anything that would qualify under the FMLA.)

Our current plan combines vacation and sick, but in my past life with vacation and sick separate, our policy stated that sick pay could be used only for the employee's own illness. (Not to care for someone else who is sick) I don't remember the exact verbiage.

Our Policy states the following:

"Sick leave shall be considered a benefit and privilege and not a right for the employee to use at his/her discretion. Employees shall, therefore, utilize their accumulated sick leave allowance for absences due to such reasons as follows: personal illness or physical incapacity, exposure to a contagious disease thereby endangering the health of the other employees, personal illness within the immediate family when the employee’s presence is necessary to care for the ill family member, disability resulting from pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions, enforced quarantine of the employee in accordance with community health regulations; or, to keep an appointment with a licensed medical doctor, dentist, or other recognized practitioner."

Once again CA has a law. We must allow employees to use half of their sick leave to be absent to care for a sick family member. If there's no state law, then you can have whatever policy you like regarding the use of sick leave.

We have PTO, so employees can use it for any reason.

We call it sick/personal time. They can use it for any reason they want.

If they call in and say they're "sick" then they go shopping at the mall--how would you know and what difference does it make? You're giving them the time and you know as well as they do, that they're gonna use it for times when they aren't sick.

Our policy allows us to use sick leave to care for anyone living with us, including children or parents.

Back then, I didn't write the policies, just attempted to enforce them. x:)

We allow ees to use sick time in increments of one hour for "their own illness or injury or that of an immediate family member (including spouse, children, and parents of the employee). This includes doctor appointments for the employee or immediate family members."

As many have already stated, we have personal/sick leave as well as vacation. Ee's can dip into either balances to cover their own illnesses or that of their families.
