If a person has their hours cut from 40 to 24 d/t finacial problems with company, does the person have any recourse through unemployment? Person is in Georgia.
NY has a workshare program that allows ee's to qualify for partial UI whose hours are cut due to workload. Georgia may have a similar program. But, in NY the company must sign up ahead of time and receive approval prior to the start of the reduced hours.
Most states, Georgia included, have a provision in their respective employment security laws which allow partial UI payments due to reduced hours caused by lack of work.

Typically if the remaining wages equal or exceed what would be the 'weekly benefit amount' there is no UI received. I.E. if the Maximum WBA in my state is $250 per week and my wages, if laid off, would qualify me for $245 per week and I am still making $260 per week on my reduced schedule, I don't draw. But if, with the reduced schedule, I'm making only $212 per week, I would draw what's called a partial claim. In such cases, one easily can reach a point where it would pay them just as much to get themselves laid off.
Thanks Don, very helpful. It may well be remaining wages would exceed. Case is one of my dearest friends, father of my God children, husband of my best friend of 20 years. He has been with this company 7 years..company ethics are a bit different, I think he is getting scr####. Case is complicated by the fact he is now in late 50's and having trouble with post polio..I do not think he will find another job easily if at all. He could easily qualify for LTD or SSDI but will not do it. For him to stay home and doing nothing will kill him. x:-( Hope you all will help me hope for the best!
Also, when they told him yesterday, they had nothing in writing and "didn't know" what the status of his benefits would be. Personally, didn't think that was much of a way to handle it. xx( Thanks all, for letting me vent. Am pretty ticked. .
Far be it from me to suggest anything sinister, but you should work with him on his need to record any clues of age or disability discrimination that he may witness at the workplace. Just to make certain about the state UI law there, he can call any UI office and pose the scenario and ask how that situation might affect a person's claim.

i would think unemployment would find the reduction voluntary and not award benefits.
