Need some advice/direction

We had an employee severely injured earlier in the year while on the job. He will most certainly not be able to return to his previous working environment. I'm told the State of TN does not have a program for retraining of an individual in this situation. Does anyone have information otherwise?

  • Our W/C Insurance Carrier would rather pay for Voc-rehab rather than a disability for life. I've never heard of a State that governs that decision. Check with your Insurance Carrier.

  • Call you state division of W.C., they might be able to give you guidance. Also your insurance carrier can. If they can return to another job, with same pay it will help reduce the value of the claim. TN is a bad state when it comes to WC.....good luck.

  • All Comp carriers contract with private firms who employ vocational specialists and placement personnel. These people will link with the state agencies to develop opportunities for the 'client'. They also meet with the 'client' to evaluate him and to deelop a sense of mutual trust. Their goal is actually more directed at developing information to prove the individual is capable of doing some jobs but will not pursue or accept work. But, if in the process, they do manage to help the 'client' find a job, that works to their advantage also. Vocational Rehabilitation programs are available in 50 states, but the state does not offer it free upon referral from the employer. The carrier should be setting this relationship up.
