Name Change

An employee of ours came to the office wanting to change her surname due, she said, to marriage. As it turns out, the proof she provided indicates that she was married 2 years ago! We have no idea why the sudden desire to change; she is Bosnian and communications are strained.
Is there any reason why NOT to make the name change?!

As long as she has provided documentation to the name change there should be no issue. Just make sure you see her new Soc Sec card reflecting the new name for all reporting reasons.

[font size="1" color="#FF0000"]LAST EDITED ON 11-24-03 AT 03:08PM (CST)[/font][br][br]I can only think of reasons why you SHOULD change the name. The main one being so your payroll records match up with the IRS and the SSA, if she has already changed it legally.

As long as she has the proper documentation required for a name change,(We require a new SS Card) you should do it. If she only has a marriage certificate I would ask for a new SS Card or something that shows that she has gone through the process to change it legally.

Just my thoughts.

Thanks for the input. It just really threw me off that she's waited 2 years past her marriage!

Maybe she misplaced her husband shortly after the wedding and forgot she was married. Then, while vacuuming one day she came across the documents.... oh, never mind. This is getting weird. x;-)

We had a similar case where an EE waited about 8 years to change her name. She and her fiance emigrated from Algeria and were married soon after coming here. She did not change her name when she got married because she was afraid it would mess up all her paperwork with the INS. Fortunately, her english is quite good so she was able to explain to us before we could ponder over the delay. Just make sure you see the new Social Security card before changing.
