I have been invited to this years' SHRM Christmas party. Should I bring my husband who works at a different company and is a union member?

Can we assume this is a local chapter's party? If so, is it past/present practice that people who are invited bring along guests? Does it matter that your guest works 'at a different company'? Do they check credentials at the door to see who works where? Can a union member have fun at a Christmas party or would only the SHRM members be allowed to have fun? Would your guest wear a button proclaiming 'Union Member' to the party, or would he attend to enjoy the party, contribute to the fun and have a good time? Is the theme of this year's party "We Hate Unions"? Seems to me like you should feel free to take your husband to the party and have a good time.

I have another question. I'm attending a Christmas party this year and am allowed to bring a guest. I have a friend who is a SHRM member. Should I consider taking him to this Christmas party?

I am a SHRM Atlanta member and normally go to our Christmas parties. I don't remember it being a "family/spouse" type of party, but I guess if you want to pay for them to go you could. (Limited on the number of guest a member can bring in a year.) It doesn't matter that they are union, if it is the type of party that you bring guest.
(I had better check my calander to see when and where ours is.)
Just ask whomever invited you. They may not have enough 'guest' spots for your spouse.

The best idea is to check with the local SHRM group to see what their practice is. I invited my spouse to a SHRM dinner and then discovered that most 'guests' were HR related... either another person from the department or the SHRM member's supervisor. Everyone made him feel welcome in spite of the fact that he's a union member... Actually, I don't remember anyone even asking him what he did for a living.

Tell your husband ixnay on the nionuay, unless he wants to get an earful. You're not gonna find a whole lot of pro-union folks at a SHRM function. I personally wouldn't marry a union member, but that's just me. Heck, a non-exempt status might nix the whole thing for me as well. (Just a joke, guys. I'm really not THAT shallow.....uh, we're just talking about a member, right, not a Shop Steward?)

How comfortable are you going to your husbands union parties? Other posts are good regarding whether or not it the hosts planned for non HR guests.

Wow! You've been invited to THE SHRM Christmas party - how did you score that invite? Seeing how there must only be one SHRM Christmas party around as your husband works at a "different" company, then yes I would bring him - it's so special to be invited to THE SHRM Christmas party.

Wait...did you say he was a union member? Well, in that case, didn't you guys receive an invitation to THE AFL-CIO Christmas party? I would go there - you would have more fun.

I can't believe SHRM is having a "Christmas" party. To be politically correct we have changed ours to a "Holiday" party! That is when we have one! If guests are invited, i would take him along.

I wonder why it took 3 days to realize that? SHRM doesn't have "Christmas" parties but they do have Holiday get togethers. Their invitation indicates if guests are included and the cost of bringing one. A SHRM member knows that the "guest" can be of any persuasion with different opinions or points of view.

Let's see. We are about 3,000 or so miles apart. So......I'll have to find a SHRM Holiday gettogether midway. This way we each travel 1500 or so miles. Will I be your guest or will you be mine? The ONLY problem I have is your statement about behaving. How disappointing. ;;)

Most of us have three things somewhere in their family tree: A cattle thief, A hooker, and A union member. All of them are God's children and bring home the bacon.

Yes, and at the family get togethers, the tales of the cattle thief are lauded, the hooker is regarded sympathetically & the union member is laughed at - but hey, that's maybe just my family x;-)
