Documenting I9 Information

When gathering I9 verification, after copying and recording; i.e., drivers license and social security card, how long can they be kept with the I9's? I was under the impression that copies if made of these documents should be destroyed after recording the information, whether it be birth certificates, etc. What are the rules?

I-9 compliance does not require you to make copies of documents presented as evidence of employment eligibility. However, if you do, you must file them with the I-9s for as long as the law requires. Remember, if you decide to copy, you MUST do so for all employees.
