Employee Numbers

We currently use employee's Social Security Numbers as their employee numbers and are looking to change that. Any suggestion on how we can develop a different system ?

Use dates of hire, start with the employee with the most senioriy being assigned number 1 and go from there.

We use the payroll file #.

We arranged the employees in hire date order and then issued a 4 digit number starting with 1000. Works great for us. Can tell at a glance who has more seniority.

We just use the last 4 digits of social security number.

That's a good idea Jules! Doesn't compromise the security of the number and yet provides a number that the individual can easily recall in the event he needs to recall it for a form or whatever.

WE USE THE STANDARD OOO1, 0002 sequence; it works for us and payroll/accounting use the number HR assigned. We established a register 10 years ago and we are now up to #1542 and it (the assigned number) remains with that individual forever. The last four of the social security number might just double up on someone, what a mess that would be. The first three digits of the Social identifys the location of origin of issue like 324 is Columbus, SC. The next two digits, I believe identifys a region to the SSA. The last 4 are randum and could be repeated in some other state or region. Which means that the last four would not guaranteeeee a non-repeat happening without the other associated numbers. I do not recommend the last 4 suggestion. Pork

We use the last four digits of the social security # as I stated before, but add our location # at the front of that. We have not had a duplicate yet. We have been unable to use a # when we re-hire someone as ADP will not accept it. We just raise the # by 1. That is also what we would do if there were a duplicate. There have only been a few times that we have had to do that. It seems to work for us.
