Adding 2nd Shift & Shift Differential

We are thinking of adding a 2nd Shift (4-12pm) to our existing production lines. We currently have about 48ees. The production staff - made up of electrician & carpenters - work 7:30-4pm.

Does anyone have any information on Shift Differential pay? Especially for the types of personnel we have, that would be very helpful.

Thanks.

  • We pay our staff a 10% shift differential. We also include the 10% for holidays, vacation and personal/sick days.
  • There are several ways of setting up a differential system. Just as ritaanz stated you could use the percentage system. That way their differentials go up at the same time that the pay goes up. You could also attach the differential to the pay and then they get the differential even if they fill in on another shift. Then you have the flat hourly rate system. This too can be based on only when you work qualifying hours or attached to their pay. There are differentials paid for second and third shifts and for weekend hours. Some companies pay the differentials for all hours that qualify and others pay it if the ee works 4 hours into the shift that qualifies. Then you have stacking of differentials for those that work, for example, 2nd shift Saturday. It's fun, this HR stuff. I love it!!!
