Personal Cell Phone Use

Need suggestions on addressing personal cell phone use with administrative employees. Seems they think that by having their kids call them at work on their cell phone instead of going through the company switchboard they "aren't receiving excessive personal calls at work". Has anyone else had this problem or do you have a policy that spells out personal cell phone use while at work?

  • We just dealt with this very problem recently. Unfortunately, our employees tend to "test the limits" so it essentially required us to take a hard line. Simply put, employees with personal cell phones are not to turn their cell phones on while on company premises. Phone calls and voice mail check can be made during one's break or lunch, but that's it.

    Hope this helps! Good luck.

  • This is a manufacturing plant. Therefore, cel phones and beepers can only be on and used during breaks and lunchtime but the employee cannot be walking around.
  • I don't see personal cell phone calls any differently than personal telephone calls (or personal emails for that matter). Excessive is excessive regardless of what communication tool you use. Our "Telephone Usage" policy is short & sweet but does state that "to minimize disruption in the workplace, cellular phones should be turned off unless you are on break". This had to be written after a recent warehouse dept meeting was interrupted by three different ringing cell phones.
