Pay for time during ESL classes

I'm putting together ESL classes for some of our supervisors and potential employees, the classes will be administer on-site by a college instructor, the classes will be 2 days a week, after work hours, the company is paying for tuition and books, do I also have to compensate employees for the time in the classes?(which is most likely going to be overtime).

Thanks

  • If the classes are voluntary -- no compensation is required.

Did this at a previous employer and was very successful... for morale. I don't think anyone (myself included) became fluent in either language, but it built comaraderie among co-workers. They helped each other with the mechanics of their opposing languages, which fostered a working communication that previously had been a frustration. Lots of good natured laughing. Spanish with an East Texas drawl is pretty funny! We even developed some standard "terms" for parts of our production process.
