Bounty Hunters!!!

I have 2 bounty hunters looking for one of my employees. Well, the employee who is a manager left without telling anyone where he was going. He left an entire building with no manager. When and if he returns my VP wants to let him go for insubordination. Are there any concerns I should have about him letting this person go?

  • Does your company have a policy on job abandonment? Several of my previous employers had a policy that if an employee leaves the premises without informing anyone and does not return or contact their manager within a specified amount of time (usually 3 days), it is considered a voluntary resignation. If you don't have a policy on job abandonment, you may want to send the employee a certified letter indicating that they need to contact you by a certain date or their employment will be terminated. In my mind, a manager who abandons their job and staff without notification, should be disciplined or terminated based on neglect of duty.
  • Thank you, I was thinking along the same lines, but I wanted to make sure I wasn't forgetting any laws I had to abide by.
  • I agree with Mutagawa. Send the letter if you don't have an AWOL policy. No response, terminate employment accordingly.
  • I would send a letter if you don't have a policy, but state in the letter that he/she left work on X date without informing anyone leaving the building with not management. He/she has not shown up for work in ? days. Based on these facts, the company has no other choice but to conclude that he/she has voluntarily quit (not been terminated)his/her job with no notice. If there are extenuating circumstances, please feel free to contact us by X date.

You would hate for this individual to be able to collect unemployment from you for being terminated if he/she can think of a sympathetic lie to tell after the fact to Unemployment. Save yourself the hassle by labeling it a "voluntary quit with no notice". Also institute a job abandonment policy ASAP.
