what are the pros and cons of implenting video surveillance in the work place. Is it legal?

On the plus side (1) having a clearly visiable video camera (like they have in gas stations) can deter crime, (2) It is good evidence if a crime occurs.
Most employers that uses video cameras use them only in areas where there is a high probability that items might be stolen (for example, exits, entrances and loading docks). Usually they are clearly visible and the employer might even put up a warning sign about the camera, which will help to deter crime.
The bottom line is that any video camera needs to be driven by a legitimate business interest, and if theft is occuring, it should not be your only means of investigation.
