I-9 disaster
I was hired as office administrator who handles payroll and HR.
While going through the I-9's, I noticed that some were signed and dated in June 2011. However these employees did not start work until August 2011.
The I-9's were not filled out by employer until July 2011, way beyond the time frame they should have been.
How can I correct this so if we are ever audited, we will be compliant?
Here is a timeline of what went down.
Interview job fair
All that showed up, flled out all paperwork including I-9....
It wasn't until weeks later, they were called upon for work.
These employees were setup in our payroll system days after they completed their I-9
My question is this? Should the dates on the I-9 match the date they were added to the payroll system for compliance sake? Or should I change the date in payroll to match the actual start date?
Some I-9's are missing documentation too and now the employee's don't even work here any longer

According to the USCIS instructions for employers, an employer must "Ensure that the employee completes Section 1 of Form I-9 by his or her first day of work for pay.Employees may complete Section 1 of Form I-9 at any time between acceptance of a job offer and the first day of work for pay." The instructions also say "You may not begin the Form I-9 process until you offer an individual a job and he or she accepts your offer."
