For those of you who are interested in Union issues, I thought this write up on the Employee Free Choice Act was interesting. . . .http://www.mbf-law.com/resources/publications/1913.pdf , especially the piece on the effect the Act may have on non-unionized workplaces. Sounds like it could be pretty impactful.

Just heard that President Bush would veto the Employee Free Choice Act (H.R. 800) if it passed the Senate. According to SHRM, the DOL Secretary (Chao) said that the Bush administration rejects any attempt to deprive the rights of workers to vote in a private ballot in a union election. She said the bill would “strip workers of control over whether they belong to a union” . In addition, Chao objected to the bill’s proposal to mandate binding arbitration that likely would often force employers and employees into agreements that neither would like, but could not be changed during a collective bargaining period. Good news for employers who wish to stay union free!

The New York Times recently reported the same thing. This may not be a completely dead issue in the future, though, especially if there is a Democrat elected in 2008. Employers should definitely keep an eye on this legislation and remain vigilant in opposing it.

so it seems as if this bill is plugging along...i read in the news today that the senate is expected to vote on the bill this week. what can we as employers do to stop the senate from passing it? will the white house veto it??

The best thing you can do is contact your senator. Many of business groups are rallying against the bill, including SHRM. The president has promised to veto it, but no one is certain yet whether the senate will be able to override that veto.

well, looks like the republcans blocked the bill from coming to a vote...we're safe for now!
