I work for an Illinois employer and will soon have a young college student who will be doing an 8-week internship. Can someone give me some insight if interships are handled like a regular new non-exempt employee? Is all the new employee documents completed the same?

We have always handled our interns just like any other new, non-exempt employee. Same new hire paperwork and everything.

Same here, but we do have an special employment category for them that exempts them from all but legally mandated benefits (meaning, they aren't eligible for things like health insurance, PTO, etc).

If the intern is through a college or university, the school may also have paperwork that you will need to complete. Especially if the intern is to receive a "grade" for this internship. The school can also help you with information as to how previous interns were set up with their employers.
