Fire Notation and Rating

Sometimes I see a "fire" burning next to a particular message. What does that mean? Also, what is the rating assigned to some messages? Thanks!

We disabled the rating system.

As for the flaming forum threads, the flames designate a topic as "hot" based on the fact that the topic has generated quite a few replies (at least 8).
