My Father is from New Haven. It is just outside Fort Wayne. I've only visited 3 times in my life, so I dont know much about it. I do know they do sell beer- Its so damn hot and humid in the summer you need it. Its close enough to Fort Wayne that you can go there for entertainment if necessary.
Your out of luck... My Father moved to NM in the early 1950's after a tour in Korea. He decided he had had enough of the hot humid summers and freezing snow covered winters. His mom continued to live there until her death a couple of years ago- hence the trips back for me.
If you have time drive to Auburn (~30 min), and see the Duzenberg/Cord auto museum.
I work about five minutes west of New Haven in Fort Wayne. Yes, they certainly sell beer there. I may offend my co-workers from New Haven, but I would guess most people go into Fort Wayne for entertainment. It's about 15 minutes to the downtown area. We still have the Wizards. Also the Komets hockey team (UHL)and the Fort Wayne Freedom (an indoor arena football league). There are tons of restaurants and clubs. If you are planning a visit, I would suggest the Oyster Bar on Calhoun Street and any of the Casa (Italian) restaurants. They are a local chain with about 4 or 5 locations in the city. Snickerz is a really fun comedy club and Pierre's hosts alot of live bands.
It's true that we do have high humidity in the summer and lots of snow and ice to deal with in the winter. But it's still my hometown and I enjoy it here.
P.S. We still host the Redwing convention. They were here last summer. Here, there and everywhere! We chatted with members on several occassions at restaurants. They are a really neat group of people!
I can't get over you Northern folks who speak of 'High Humidity'. Down here, high humidity is a 104 degree day with 98% humidity when you change shirts 4 times on a Saturday. This runs typically from June through early September.
Yea, we have to do that once or twice a summer too ... lol. I'm only about an hour from Ft Wayne. If you get in the area, give me a jingle Don & we'll meet in Kalamazoo for a drink & see if Elvis shows up again.

Indiana University - Purdue University - Ft. Wayne
They are the little brother university to IUPUI that made the NCAA basketball tournament year before last.
I lived in Indiana for several years and we used to go see the Wizards (class A baseball) play.
Wizzards... that brings back memories. Thanks for the reminder.

What is taking you there?

That's about the time you'd make one of those watermellon cooler recipes and ENJOY!
