Help with Certification

I was sort of thrown into the HR profession over 4 years ago with no education or previous experience in the field. I have noticed some of you mentioning certification for HR. How do I go about trying for certification? Ideally I would like to study from home as it is difficult to get out of the house (no car, isolated area). Am I dreaming or is this possible? I have a total lack of any knowledge on this subject so any advice would be great.

Your first step in my opinion would be to go to

you can get information on taking the test, when it is scheduled, cost, benefits...etc. I used the SHRM learning system for studying for the test and also participated in an online study group. THey should be starting a new one up soon. I do not have the contact persons name with me right now but will get it from my home computer and send it to you if you decide you are interested in doing it. If you belong to a local HR chapter, see if they have classes to prep you for the test. I purchased the SHRM learning system and attended my local chapter's classes on Saturday mornings. Both were a huge help in allowing me to get my SPHR the first time I took the exam.
