Exit Interviews

Is there any way to increase the response to exit interviews? Since most of our employees are not present when the managers complete separation reports (restuarants), we have been mailing them with the separation notices. We ask that they fill it out and return in the self addressed, stamped envelope enclosed with the paperwork. The response has been non-existent. Does anybody have a better idea to increase responses?

I think the above suggestion is excellent. You might also consider telephoning the employees instead of writing them. You'd probably get more information. Mail them a free meal certificate for participating.

Also, you can hire an outside contractor to do this. Call me if you decide to go that route and I'll make a referral to a business that uses grad students to call ex-employees and then furnishes real-time information via computer to their clients.

I have a couple of thoughts: make the form simple to complete and then call the employee to get more details once they've responded, give employees the option to complete it anonymously, and mail it out promptly after termination. I've found that the more time passes between a separation and the exit interview, the less likely you are to gather the information. Good luck!

If you send me your email address, I will send you the form I use. I ask the employee to bring it with them to the exit interview, which I conduct, not the manager.
