2004 Holidays

I just asked our CEO what our Christmas Day observation would be this year. He indicated that we probably wouldn't have one. Our handbook states that a recognized holiday falling on a Saturday will be observed the preceding Friday, however in our case, Christmas Eve is a paid holiday as well, and so we will already be off.

I doubt the wisdom of shorting everyone a recognized paid holiday this year. Does anyone have any good arguments I can present?

Our agency is observing December 24, 25, and 27 as our Christmas Holidays. Since Christmas falls on Saturday and we receive Christmas Eve anyway, it is only logical that the following Monday would be observed as the Christmas Day holiday.

We are observing the Christmas Day holiday on Thursday, 12/23/04, and Christmas Eve holiday on Friday, 12/24/04. We'll be doing the same long weekend thing the following week for New Year. Our company always tries to shuffle the holidays so we can have long weekends. We're manufacturing so it's pretty easy for us to do that.

We're a public entity and will be doing exactly as mushroomHR's organization. Thursday and Friday off - both weeks in question.

Good arguments? Look at your holiday policy, does it indicate that employees will 'receive the following days as paid holidays'? Will you be in violation of your own policy if you 'short' employees by a day? Pay them for six days that week?
At a minimum, you should write your policy to cover a situation like this.

Our policy allows for two floating holidays and we will use one of them to shift Christmas to give us a four day weekend. The only logic I can think of in his case is to ask him if he will dress as Scrooge on the 23rd and offer to bring him some ragged pants.

We too are taking the 23rd as our "Christmas Eve" holiday and the 24th as "Christmas".

We are taking the 24th only this year. Normally we would have off the 25th and by Thanksgiving they offer 1/2 day off on the 24th but it is never a definite thing.

We get Eve and Day off. With Day falling on Saturday and Eve on Friday, we will observe Day the following Monday. I would rather do it on Thursday, but our biggest customer is observing it on Monday and we have to follow suit.
