I am looking for some basic (entry level) training on benefits plans etc. Has anyone attended one recently that you would suggest?

I would try EBIA. Employee Benefits Institute of America.
They have seminars around the country, they also offer the manuals if you cannot attend the seminar.
I have attended a few and they are very well taught and in depth. They do cover a lot of material,so it is an actual learning experience.
You might check out their web site at www.ebia.com

I agree that EBIA offers the best in basic training.
