Sabbatical leave

We are a not-for-profit, planning to add a 4 or 6 week sabbatical leave to our list of benefits. This would be a once-in-a-lifetime benefit for those employed at least 7 years both as a reward for staying a long time and to help with burn out. Does anyone have such a policy in place already?

We do not- however, this is an interesting idea, and an alternative to an idea of giving more vacation (per year) to reward long time employees. I'd be interested to hear more. Thanks!

Would this leave be paid?

Yes, we are looking at a paid leave. As we progress with our planning, it may end up being less time . . . maybe 3 weeks instead of 4 or 6 weeks though. But it will be in addition to vacation and other paid time off.

My better half has this at the college where she works. Same thing - after seven years of continuous emploment they can apply to take one semester off on Sabbatical. They are to use this time for research, writing, studies, etc. If it is approved, and so far eveyone has been, they do not have to take it at any certain time. They can save up to 3 semesters worth so they could retire and still be paid for an additional three semesters, sort of a golden parachute. She knows of one college in IN or IL that forces their faculty to take the sabbaticl off as soon as it is earned.

We offer a 6-month paid sabbatical for managers with 20 years or longer with the company. We have a lot of 20+ year managers, but only one has actually taken us up on the offer.

We are considering a sabbatical leave program so I am interested in finding out if those of you who have paid leave programs require employees who are eligible to allocate some of thier earned vacation leave annually to a sabbatical leave bank? If not, does the organization just fund the sabbatical as an additional benefit?
