I'm just wondering how many weeks of short-term disability leave most companies give their employees. We currently give 26 weeks (@ 70% of base weekly pay) and I would like to propose that we reduce it to 12. Thanks.

13 weeks @ 50% Your company is extremely generous. Over 2 years @ 70%. If your EEs are as ingenious as ours, co-worker Sally Jane's uncle is a physician and he will be glad to fill out disability papers for you. Bingo!! 2 yrs. of FREE pay. Then they would find a stay-at-home and stuff envelopes part-time job to supplement what additional income they needed to survive. Quite a racket and it does go on every day.

We have self-insured STD. We used to accept every claim that was signed by a doc. Now we use Jefferosn Pilot "advice to pay" and it has weeded out some claims that may have been paid otherwise. The other good thing about it is word gets around that it is not as easy as it used to be.

We are self funded and have 70% for 26 weeks. However, they have to go through the approval hoops with our LTD carrier. We pay them extra for that admin service, but it got us out of having everyone gone the full 26 weeks on STD. Having a medical/insurance brain checking recovery plans tightened things up for us.

We have 26 weeks of STD at 60%. We administer (like a benefit not an insuance policy). Difficult to make medical decisions, so often it is paid when I don't think we should.

You should look in to an "advice to pay" scenario. We had the same problem you have until we found Jefferson Pilot. I'm sure their are other companies out there.

1st 30 days - nothing, next 31-90 days 60% then long-term disability.

We are also self funded. We pay 60% of gross wages up to a maximum of $400.00 per week - 26 weeks. $400/week isn't really a lot. People are usually anxious to get back to work. I really don't believe that we have an abuse situation here with our staff.

STD is available after 30 days off and continues for up to 26 weeks at 60%. Then if needed, LTD kicks in until Social Security picks up all or some of the cost. Provided by an outside source and I agree we have had to encourage them to ask for second opinions on a few cases.

We have a 19 day elimination period and then STD for 10 weeks at 70%. If still disabled, kicks in to LTD at 60%. It is administered by UNUM and they have stringent rules for length of time for various illnesses and surgeries.

We are self insured as well. We pay 50% for 12 weeks and require employees to supplement the other 50% with their PTO. Then LTD kicks in at 50%, however, employees can buy up to 60% or 70%.
