Our company is in the process of purchasing a forklift for our warehouse. It is my understanding that Virginia requires training for anyone using this type of equipment. What are the requirements?
Go to OSHA's website for information. Training is required. Also check if your state has any regs. Your workers compensation carrier should also be able to assist you. Good luck.
Forklift training requires a hands-on portion and a lecture portion. Anyone who operates a forklift must be trained BEFORE they drive it. They must also fill out a daily inspection sheet that verifies all the components are working properly. There are also many other requirements if you are going to charge/store an extra battery.
A FORKLIFT IS THE MOST DANGEROUS PIECE OF EQUIPMENT IN A MANUFACTURING ENVIRONMENT!
Do not take them lightly. They weigh more than a car and can VERY easily kill someone.
Ask the comapny you are buying it to throw in doing a training program for you people...... if they sell Yale forklifts they will have a most excellent training program.
One thing to keep in mind that retraining is required when they show they are no longer operating properly. I.E when they have a mishap....... just an fyi
