What is a Reasonable Salary?

I am curious to hear some opinions on salary in HR.

First off I am the HR manager for a manufacturing facility. We have about 250 emplyoees of which 200 or so speak only Spanish. I am in charge of benefits, safety (workman's comp, written programs, and training), employee relations (harassment, arguements, and other issues), OSHA and newhire orientation (Spanish and English), hiring and firing, placement, two company parties of about 400 people twice a year, incentive programs and recently there has been a union voted in and I am the center man for the negotiation, interaction with the CEO and the legal counsel.

I have been here three years. I have a degree in International Relations and Spanish, this is my first HR position. Since I have started here I have managed to cut accidents in half for the first two years and we are on a track this year to have an overall reduction of about two-thirds. Last year our WC carrier sent us a dividend check back in the amount of 60K and I did not see any of that. I am on call and I spend a lot of my time dealing with people's problems and time spent on the manufacturing floor.

I just wanted to here some feedback on what would be a reasonable salary. A four bedroom standard house in this area costs about 100K to 125k, a galoon of milk $3, and a gallon of gas $1.50. There is a state tax but property taxes are about $1000 on the same house I mentioned above. So, the cost of living is bt cheaper.

  • A reasonable salary for the Human Resources position you describe is $136,500.00. A realistic one is somewhere between 53 and 66. Good luck.
  • Great point, thanks for the input. I am at about 50% of realism.
  • jerkyguy, "Dandy Don" has beat me to your posting; however, it must be said that it all depends on where you are located. Dandy Don suggest a reasonable amount for central Mississippi. I on the other hand will tell you the top salary of $135,000 is about right for the HR in a large retail chain, $50,000.00 about right for a manufacturing facility in the Delta, $35000 to $40,000. in Northern Mississippi regardless of the brand of business. If you were on the coast of Mississippi the gaming opportunities there have driven the HR salaries out of sight, literally; it is a dream world, but fun when you "hit" the good times and your luck is in! Enjoy the your work and the pleasure, don't get into the "working for money" habit in the HR world, it does not pay. Get into the operations and production side and reap the good money in the good times and the opportunity to change jobs and positions in the bad times. Good luck Pork
