We get half of 12/31 off and 1/1 as holiday pay. This year we are observing 12/30 as our 1/2 day off and 12/31 as the day we would normally have off for New Year. We are doing the same for Christmas because we normally get half a day off on Christmas Eve and then Christmas Day. So this year we get half of the 23rd off and all of the 24th off.
We're doing the same, although it was quite a discussion. I wanted to make sure employees were getting the same "amount" (1-1/2 days) of time, otherwise I knew they'd feel ripped off. Well, they do anyway, since we work overtime and holidays are paid at 8. But I try to be thankful for a paid day off!

Since we work a 4 day week, we are closed on Fridays. this year are holiday closings are Thursday, 12/23 for Christmas and Monday, January 3 for New Year's.
My company will observe New Years Day on Friday, December 31. The ususal standard is if holiday falls on Saturday - celebrate on Friday; if holiday falls on Sunday - celebrate on Monday.
I work for a Board of Education. The school will be closed for the week between Christmas and New Year's. The few people here, secretaries and custodians will take December 31 as their paid holiday.
We will celebrate on 12-31. The way we decide is if the holiday falls on Saturday, we take Friday. If it falls on Sunday then we take Monday. Makes things very simple.
We have to apply it to 2005 - some locations are using Monday, January 3rd, but some have turned it into a Employee-choice floating holiday (to be used whenever they choose).

We do not cross years when observing holidays
We'll be cooking pork ribs, black-eyed peas and cornbread for the happenings.
May we all look forward to a Blessed month of December 2004, with our new President George W. Bush!
