We have an irrate applicant who filled out an application. He was not qualified for the job and thus didn't get an interview.

He stopped by and inquired about the position. Once he found out that it had been filled, he demanded a copy of his application.

Do we have any responsibility to applicants to furnish this? It's just a pain and inconvenience to be making copies of applications that are already filed away. We literally get about 20 applications a day.

Your application is exactly that, yours (the companies). It is a company document, I hope you don't hand out other proprietory info to people upon request so what should be different about the company application. I say no. Just because he completed a company form does not make it his. We have employees all the time saying they want a copy of "their" personnel file. We explain as nicely as possible that it is the companies file of the record of your employment, not "your" file. We would be happy to discuss a review of your file with you upon request. We have a policy that all documents are property of the company and will not be distributed unless required by law or needed in the case of a legal matter. Hope this works for you.

On the other hand....assuming this guy has a bunch of time he doesn't know what to do with...do you really want to get into a urinary gymnastic contest with him???

Since he's not a current ee....maybe it's better to give him a copy and send him on his way.

No. Applications are company property and you are not obligated to provide a copy to applicants.

I wouldn't give him a copy and I'd also tell him thanks for showing me how correct I was not to hire you.

I agree, Company document. I had an applicant fill out an application, not qualified, and then he announced that he was sitting down and not moving until he was given the position. Finally, had to call the Police, who picked him up and dropped him off at the closest train station. Then, we received the discrimination charge (dismissed). Then, he pulled the same stunt at a local college. Life is like a box of chocolates.
