More on I-9s

I have taken over the HR responsibilities and after auditing files for compliance, I noticed that there is not an I-9 for anyone who has or is still working here. Should I have all current staff complete a form or just begin requiring it on all newly hired staff memebers?

Wait!
Before you do that, check to see if all the I-9's are kept in a separate folder somewhere as actually this is the correct thing to do.
If just some are missing, then, yes, I would ask those people to sign; but if ALL are missing, I'll bet that they are in a file somewhere.

I asked, the person they had reponsible for HR before me did not even know that it is a requirement.

Better scramble, then, and have everyone do one and explain that the previous hr person overlooked the need for this and it is important for them to document their citizenship to avoid i.n.s. inquiries.

Anyone hired before the law became effective did not have to fill out an I-9.

Anyone hired AFTER 11/06/1986 must fill out an I-9.
