Employment Applications

We are working on updating our employment applications and would like to add a question that asks something to the effect of "Are you elligible to work in the United States?". However, before we add the question we want to make sure it is 1. legal and 2. worded properly. I haven't been able to find anything regarding its legality for the state of Washington, does anyone have any advice?

It's phrased this way on our applications, "If hired, can you furnish proof you are eligible to work in the United States?"

Ditto here...the response is a yes/no with a line underneath for if no, please explain.

Ours says, simply, "Are you authorized to work in the United States? (federal law requires proof of identity and employment authorization for all new employees." So far it's passed muster (it had better -- our app. was drafted by an employment law attorney).

Ours says "Are you legally eligible for employment in the United States?"
